What We Do
Southern Berkshire Ambulance is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit Massachusetts ambulance service provider licensed at the Paramedic advanced life support level and staffed by career, part-time and volunteer EMS providers. We provide 911 Emergency Medical Services to the citizens of the Towns of Alford, Ashley Falls, Egremont, Great Barrington, Housatonic, Monterey, Mount Washington, Sheffield and Southern most West Stockbridge. We also provide Paramedic intercept services to other services transporting to Fairview Hospital.
Southern Berkshire serves three large skilled nursing facilities with a combined total of 367 beds. Intra-facility transportation is provided to Fairview Hospital which is a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital. It does have a full service emergency room however, it has limited trauma services. Critical patients seen at Fairview’s emergency room or off the floors are usually transported to either Berkshire Medical Center, a level III trauma center 22 miles away or Baystate Medical Center, a level I trauma center in Springfield, 54 miles away. Fairview rarely uses air medical transportation primarily due to the lack of a helipad within the near vicinity of the hospital. Any patients requiring air medical transportation must be transported via ground ambulance to the nearby airport 3 miles away. 911 EMS calls resulting in a critical medical or trauma patient are usually diverted by point of entry protocols to Berkshire Medical Center or air medical transport.
